Female fertility

Women are born with stocks of around 400,000 ovarian follicles. It is inside these follicles that egg cells develop. Once a month, the most mature follicle releases an egg cell. This is ovulation.

Sperm cells then have 24 hours to fertilise the egg cell. A single sperm cell can fertilise the egg cell. The nucleus of the sperm cell fuses with the nucleus of the egg cell to form an egg. On the fourth day, the egg lodges in the mucous lining of the uterus for the implantation phase. The conception process is complete and the pregnancy process begins.
